It's 2020 now and people are starting to turn to robot vacuums to keep their floors clean. If you're looking into buying one, check out this list to see which one will be best for you.
By 2020, you might have expected that we’d be relying on robots to do everything for us. But while you may not have a full-on robot maid, à la Rosie from The Jetsons, there are plenty of home automation tools on the market to make your life easier. From robotic pool sweeps to smart lights, smart thermostats, smart locks and more, you can automate all kinds of tasks — including vacuuming.
Didn’t get the robot vacuum of your dreams this Christmas? That’s okay — now you have the chance to shop around for an automatic vacuum cleaner that truly meets your needs. Here are some of the best robot vacuum cleaners on the market today.
Eufy Robovac 11S
The Eufy Robovac 11S is popular for its low price, slim design, and powerful suction. Available for just $239.99 on Amazon, the Eufy Robovac 11S picks up 11.6 grams of dirt and debris per vacuum cycle, or about 80 grams of dust and pet hair each week, which makes it more effective than many iRobot models and gives upright vacuums a run for their money. The 11S is lower in profile than its predecessor, the 11, so it can get into more places to get your floors even cleaner than ever before. It’s also much quieter than many robot vacuums, producing just 55 decibels — not enough to interrupt most conversations or distract from your Netflix binging.
The 11S doesn’t have any virtual walls or barriers to stop it from thoroughly cleaning your whole room. However, it can get hung up easily on throw rugs and door mats. It also takes a long time to complete a full cleaning cycle — about two hours.
iRobot Roomba 690
An entry-level model from the iRobot line, the Roomba 690 retails for about $299. It’s a smart robot vacuum, offering Wifi connectivity and the ability to control the cleaner remotely via an app. That’s a feature you won’t find in other models at this price point.
You can start this cleaner remotely via your smartphone, and it picks up a moderate amount of dirt — about 84 grams a week. In lab tests, the 690 picked up about three-quarters of the pet hair from our sample, and about 12 grams of the cork. It comes with a virtual wall, which you can use to keep the vacuum confined to a single room with one door.
You can also use the virtual wall to protect pet food bowls or other objects on the floor from the vacuum — and you’ll need it, because this cleaner hits objects with about 3.3 pounds of force, enough to knock objects off of your coffee table if they’re too close to the edge. But perhaps the manufacturer designed it that way on purpose, because the 690’s zealous ramming of furniture and corners allows it to get into nooks and crannies that other robot vacuums can’t touch.
Neato Botvac D3 Connected
At $399, the Neato Botvac D3 Connected is one of the pricier robot vacuum cleaners on this list, but it’s also one of the nicest. It’s a great solution for pet owners. With a powerhouse motor, strong brushes and a smart design, it can pick up 11.7 grams of dirt per run or 82 grams per week. With its flat front, the D3 is good at cleaning around baseboards, but not so great at getting into tight spaces and corners. Nor does it have a virtual wall — but you can keep it away from places where you don’t want it to go with a special magnetic strip, sold separately, that sticks to the floor.
While its pickup power alone is formidable, the D3’s best feature may be its Wifi connectivity. The D3 is compatible with Facebook Chatbot, Google Home and Amazon Alexa. A smartphone app or voice controls allow you to start or stop the vacuum cycle, and you can even check the level of charge on its battery. You can’t, however, tell the D3 to go back to its charging station. It will only return to its charging station if you let it finish its cleaning cycle.
