On an earlier call, an HVAC repair Expert traced the problem to a weak run capacitor. This time, Heather came back with the correct part and tools, ready to learn how to replace her AC capacitor.
With the new part and tools in hand, Heather opened the AHS app and connected with our HVAC Expert Gary. She explained that she needed some help replacing the capacitor on her HVAC unit and had already done the prep work by shutting off the power and removing the panel.
Expert Gary started with safety. He walked her through discharging the old capacitor with an insulated screwdriver, reminding her to hold it only by the handle. A quick tap across the terminals cleared any leftover charge, and with that, they were ready to move forward with the fix.

They compared the terminals on both parts and moved each wire from the old capacitor to the new one, one at a time, ensuring everything matched up just right. With the wires connected, there was just one more obstacle to overcome.
The new capacitor was slightly larger than the previous one, and it wouldn’t fit into the old bracket. Our HVAC Expert Gary didn’t miss a beat. He suggested a quick workaround, using a zip tie or electrical tape to secure it in place. “The key,” he said, “is keeping the top terminals from touching any metal.
Once everything was in place, Heather reconnected the power and turned the system back on. The condenser hummed to life, the fan started spinning, and the buzz that started it all was gone. “And there she goes,” Expert Gary said, pleased.
