American Home Shield® member Heather’s new house was coming along great—until her HVAC wouldn’t shut up. The noise was relentless. Instead of guessing, she opened the American Home Shield® app and started a video chat.

Video chat of an AC Unit being repaired

On an earlier call, an HVAC repair Expert traced the problem to a weak run capacitor. This time, Heather came back with the correct part and tools, ready to learn how to replace her AC capacitor.

A quick chat, a simple fix, and one quiet AC

The call

With the new part and tools in hand, Heather opened the AHS app and connected with our HVAC Expert Gary. She explained that she needed some help replacing the capacitor on her HVAC unit and had already done the prep work by shutting off the power and removing the panel.

Expert Gary started with safety. He walked her through discharging the old capacitor with an insulated screwdriver, reminding her to hold it only by the handle. A quick tap across the terminals cleared any leftover charge, and with that, they were ready to move forward with the fix.

Expert Tip

Do not try this without the help of an Expert.

The fix

They compared the terminals on both parts and moved each wire from the old capacitor to the new one, one at a time, ensuring everything matched up just right. With the wires connected, there was just one more obstacle to overcome.

The new capacitor was slightly larger than the previous one, and it wouldn’t fit into the old bracket. Our HVAC Expert Gary didn’t miss a beat. He suggested a quick workaround, using a zip tie or electrical tape to secure it in place. “The key,” he said, “is keeping the top terminals from touching any metal.

The outcome

Once everything was in place, Heather reconnected the power and turned the system back on. The condenser hummed to life, the fan started spinning, and the buzz that started it all was gone. “And there she goes,” Expert Gary said, pleased.

Heather smiled. “Heather was really happy to have the video chat as a benefit to her home warranty coverage.”

No more hassle, just cool and quiet comfort.

When is it time to replace an AC capacitor?

After Heather’s capacitor swap, her AC working in fine order again. But how do you know if your HVAC system needs the same fix or a complete replacement? If you’re wondering how to replace the capacitor on your AC unit, we’re here to help you with the signs of a bad capacitor, what tools and safety steps you’ll need, and what to expect if you ever have to replace one.

Signs of a weak or failed AC capacitor

A healthy capacitor helps your AC motor start quickly and run efficiently. When it weakens or fails, your system has to work harder just to get going. Here’s what you might notice:

  • Fan won’t spin: You might hear the unit running, but the fan blades stay still until you nudge them.
  • Starts and stops repeatedly: If you notice your system clicking on, shutting off, and trying again in short bursts, you may have a weak capacitor.

  • Warm air instead of cool: When the capacitor can’t deliver enough power to the compressor, your system may still run but won’t produce cold air, leaving you with airflow that feels lukewarm at best.

  • Breaker trips when the unit starts: A failing capacitor draws more current than usual, potentially overloading the circuit and causing the breaker to trip.

  • Bulged or leaking capacitor: If the top of the capacitor looks puffed up or you see oil around it, the part has failed and needs replaced.

Pro Tip

Most capacitors last around 20 years, but heat and humidity can shorten that to about 15 years in hot, humid regions.1

How do I replace an AC capacitor?

If you’re wondering how to replace a capacitor on your AC unit, know that the safest next step is to leave replacing the capacitor on your AC unit to a professional. AC capacitors store electrical energy even after the system is turned off so handling one without proper training can be dangerous.
