Eating in-season produce is a great way to save money and support local farmers. And late July and August are some of the best times to find high-quality, succulent produce at great prices. Check out what’s in season this summer.
These juicy red berries are the quintessential summer fruit. Usually pricier than other fruits, raspberry prices plummet toward the end of July. Bake them into chocolate cake, add them to oatmeal and cereal, or eat them right out of the container—nothing beats an August raspberry.
If you’ve never given plums a try, August is the perfect time to check them out. From yellow to purple and sour to sweet, plums offer some of the most varied flavors in the produce world. Try adding plums to a green salad, baking them into a tart, or even making a plum pizza.
There are three main types of summer squash: yellow, zucchini, and pattypan (which has a scalloped shape). Luckily, you’ll have time to try them all, because they’re in season for most of the summer. Quick tip: when selecting your squash at the supermarket, look for squashes with as few blemishes as possible. Summer squash is great because it is so versatile—bake it, slice and steam it, or tackle a loaf of zucchini bread.
Peaches are full of potassium, fiber, and Vitamin C. They’re also at their most plentiful in late summer. Keep in mind that peaches go from just-ripe to overripe very quickly. You can refrigerate the fruit to keep it fresher longer, but once the flesh yields to the touch, eat quickly! Fun fact bonus: did you know the peach tree is a member of the rose family?
The earliest apples start popping up around late July. Gala apples are some of the first to ripen, and their sweet flavor makes them perfect for daily snacking. Can’t wait for your favorite autumn desserts? Make a crisp or an apple cake. Galas are also perfect for homemade applesauce—slice them, add fruit, a splash of water,, and spices to a pot, then simmer until soft.
