Imagine eating a salad filled with ingredients that have just been plucked from your own back yard. The lettuce is crisp, the carrots are sweet, and the tomatoes juicy. If you think this scenario is only possible outside of city limits, think again!

Backyard gardening and urban gardening have increased in popularity in the past few years. More people than ever are looking for ways to make their food as local as possible. Growing what we need close to where we live offers many benefits, including a positive environmental impact and the freshest produce available. Urban farming also lends visual appeal, with greenery that’s both pretty and practical.

Easy to Grow Vegetables

If you’re looking for the easiest vegetables to grow, it’s important to first consider the space you have available for your home vegetable garden. Some vegetables require deeper soil to accommodate longer roots, while others only need a few inches of soil to thrive. You’ll need to take into account whether you have full sun or shade in that area to help determine the vegetables you select.

In general, here are some easy to gro vegetables for time garnders:

  • Beans. Whether you prefer green beans, bush beans or another bean altogether, beans are an easy addition to any garden. Some varieties, like runner beans, are vine-based and easy to grow on vertical surfaces and fences.
  • Carrots. Carrots are ideal candidates for container gardens since they require deep soil. There are several varieties available, so do some research to see what kinds grow best in your area.
  • Herbs. Chives, cilantro, basil and mint are hardy herbs that are easy to grow. These versatile plants can be grown in the ground or in pots. They take up very little room and can be easily harvested for use in your favorite recipes.
  • Lettuce. Lettuce is another perfect contender for growing vegetables in pots. Loose-leaf varieties are ripe for the picking within two to three weeks.
  • Peas. Both snap peas and sugar peas grow best in the cooler seasons. A trellis helps peas grow, so in-ground planting is generally preferred.
  • Peppers. These zingy vegetables come in both sweet and spicy varieties. Banana peppers and jalapeños are two of the most popular peppers available and can both be grown in pots.
  • Tomatoes. If a salad made with fresh-picked tomatoes sounds like heaven on earth, you’ll be glad to know growing tomatoes is easier than you think. There is a wide variety of tomato plants available; many that come in both standard size and miniature.

Quick Gardening Tips For Beginners

Once you’ve selected your beginner garden vegetables you’d like to grow and researched the needs of each variety, it’s time to get to work. Many plants require their seeds to be soaked before planting, and some seeds even need to be planted indoors to mature before being moved outside.

Careful pruning and diligent watering are essential for helping plants grow. Depending on where you live, you might want to research protection against deer, rabbits and other animals that can eat through your garden before you do!

No matter what you plant, your hard work will pay off when you’re able to eat the fruits (or vegetables!) of your labor.
