Plan for real estate success in the new year

It’s that time of year when we resolve to make the new year better than the last. A fresh new calendar page can be filled with hope and possibilities. Succeeding in real estate, or anything for that matter, takes mental toughness. With that in mind, here are some inspirational quotes from successful role models to motivate you in the New Year and practical advice for getting into a winning mindset.

"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible."

— Tony Robbins

Many of us start the year wanting to achieve something…getting organized, managing our finances, etc. But how many of us actually set goals, let alone ensure they are concrete, measurable and have an actual deadline? To be successful, you should think of your goal(s) like homebuyers think about their dream home. In other words, be specific and visualize exactly what you want. If you can see it, you can achieve it. For example, “I will sell X number of homes by July” or “I will grow my client base by X% within the next 12 months.” Once you’ve set your goal, write it down and list the steps you can take every day to achieve it. Review your goal often and make sure you are sticking to your plan.

"Become the person who would attract the results you seek.”

— Jim Cathcart

True success rarely comes without hard work and a lot of introspection. To be truly successful, you may have to define what kind of real estate professional you want to be and may have to put in some extra effort and hours to be that person. That may mean setting aside a block of time each day or week to stay organized. It may mean beefing up your Internet presence on social media or attracting new clients with your own blog. Perhaps it means becoming an expert in a niche market. Whatever that successful person looks like to you, become him or her by doing what’s required and you will likely have success, too.

“Change before you have to."

— Jack Welch

The real estate industry is ever-evolving and changing, which means you should be too.

Keep up on industry trends, understand and utilize the latest technology, attend industry seminars for continued professional development and update your personal image on a regular basis to stay current.

"Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude."

—  Zig Ziglar

This can be interpreted a lot of ways. But for real estate professionals, it can mean to treat every interaction as a potential networking opportunity. Being pleasant and personable in your life away from the office can have a direct, positive impact of your professional life. You never know where your next client will come from, so always put your best foot forward and have a good attitude wherever you go.

"It is not necessary to do extraordinary things to get extraordinary results."

— Warren Buffett

As they say, the little things mean a lot. Often, if you just do the little things well, that’s enough to set you apart from the competition. So make it a habit always to be responsive to emails, return phone calls in a timely manner, be particularly attentive to clients’ needs and know your market. Those simple, everyday things can yield extraordinary results. And, in the words of Mark Hunter, “It’s not about having the right opportunities. It’s about handling the opportunities right.”

"You just can't beat the person who never gives up."

— Babe Ruth

No one ever said being a real estate professional would be easy. If it were, everyone would be doing it, right? Unfortunately, rejection sometimes comes with the territory. The important part is not to take rejection personally and to handle it with grace and professionalism. Of course, if rejection is becoming a pattern, it’s important to take personal inventory and evaluate what you could be doing better and make the changes you need to keep going strong.

"There is little success where there is little laughter."

— Andrew Carnegie

Regardless of how you define success in 2017, it can’t truly be considered a win if achieving your success has made you miserable. There’s a reason (or many) you became a real estate professional in the first place. If you’ve forgotten what it was that initially drew you to the industry, go back to the basics. At the very least, you should enjoy your career and have fun doing what you’re doing. Being happy is truly the greatest success.

Remember, we set aside time to go to the gym (well, sometimes.) So why not set aside time to build our mental and emotional strength? Make a successful mindset part of your daily routine and you’re sure to find success each day in 2017.
