Keep it clean.
Remove any leaves or debris from around your unit on a regular basis, and make sure your unit’s coils stay clean. Check for bent condenser fins, and if you find any, straighten them with a fin comb. Be sure to turn off the power to the unit before inspecting or straightening the condenser fins.

Plant some shade.
Trees and shrubs can shield your home—and your air conditioner condenser—from the heat of the sun. Your home will stay cooler, and your air conditioner will operate more efficiently. And right now is a great time to plant!

Keep the cool air inside.
Watch out for leaky seams that may develop around windows and doors. Summer heat can cause old weather stripping to dry out and crack. Use a candle to detect drafts, and install new weather stripping wherever it’s needed. Be sure all windows and doors are closed when your air conditioning is on.
