Choosing a Real Estate Professional
The rebound in the housing market has many homeowners thinking about selling their homes. Choosing the right agent is critical to ensure that your home sells quickly and at the right price. Here are three key things to look for when searching for a real estate professional.
- Proper qualifications.
All legitimate real estate agents will hold a state license that permits them to operate. In addition to verifying that license, you should consider choosing an agent who is also a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, also known as NAR. NAR members have access to tools like the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and a multitude of education and training resources, and they are bound by a code of professional ethics.
- Positive referrals.
Ask your friends, family and neighbors if they’ve worked with a local agent they would recommend. You can also check sites such as Trulia and Zillow to see what others have to say. Use the information you find to build a list of potential agents, then meet with each personally before making a final decision. Remember—referrals alone should not form the basis of your choice. They’re a great place to start your search, but you should consider all factors.
- The right fit.
Do you feel comfortable talking with the agent? Do they listen to your questions and concerns and address them? What is their record of success? How long do their listings typically take to sell? And, what might be most important, how experienced is the agent selling homes in your area and in your price range? In the end, the “right fit” will mean a mix of the agent’s unique experience and expertise, their track record with past clients and your own personal chemistry with the agent.
